Turn Your Stock Rig Into A Passion Project.

The ability to upgrade your RC car has never been more straighrforward and easier.

With a wide range of options available to tweak practically any element of your RC Car; all within an affordable budget, there is nothing stopping your from turning your grunting rig into a tough as nails Track & Bash King.

I have to confess. I have had a number of hobbies turn into misguided arrangements of random bits and pieces – all through gradual disinterest-  my garage will attest to that, but upon discovering the crazy-fun world of RC cars several years ago, tweaking and upgrading has become mine and my son’s favorite passion project.

Not only do we find driving an RC Car a huge amount of fun, but over time; the fun-factor increased as our skills started to noticeably improve and so did our ability to push our first rig ( an Arrma Nero ) to its limit.   It was at this point I discovered there is a price to pay for such wild ( honestly.. we’re skilled! ) abandon!

– No RC Car is entirely indestructible.

I knew it was time to upgrade our truck, After further research, I decided to take the lid off and gaze into the belly of the beast.

I discovered so many hidden performance gain potentials to be realised and it turns out upon discovering the enthusiastic RC upgrading community that this is where another huge portion of fun is to be had with my RC!

The stock parts are designed to take a beating, but to what extent? The fun in RC cars is taking them to their limit. However It is at these thresholds where there is of course a marked increase in things breaking becoming evermore likely – even the high end Arrma models are not totally indestructible.

So you’re now ready to spend some hard earned cash – to achieve everything you can to retain your prized RC Car’s longevity and performance.  This is where upgrading comes in.  Sure, there may be initial investments to pay up-front but the joy of building up your favorite RC into a super strong speed machine is all part of the fun.

So why should you make upgrading your RC your next passion project? - A bunch of reasons!

1. Helps you learn more about how your RC Car works - with knowledge comes power!

Getting to know your car, its mechanics and the hidden potentials will give you more knowledge, and progress you as a better driver. and over time help you build intuition to improve and realise the untapped potential to improving your rigs performance.

2. Cost-Doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg!

It can be relatively cheap to customise and upgrade your RC Car. It follows that cheaper end models are likely to have a greater tendancy of things breaking upon unforeseen impacts, whereas the more expensive models are built to be more durable. However, irrespective of model you have; some of the most effective products can be relatively cheap under £50!.

Whether you are looking to improve its speed or longevity – there is a solution for it.

3. Performance!

Once you have become accustomed to the ‘out of the box’ capabilities of your rig, you will soon be keen to untap its full potential ready to start pushing it to the limit. There is
always something worthwhile looking to upgrade so as to improve and maintain your RC Car’s performance .

Reduce Overall Weight

An integral part of increasing the speed, agility and overall performance of your RC Car is to reduce its weight. There is a host of options out there, from lighter tyres to
aluminium and carbon parts. Of course this is going to be largely budget dependant in terms of how far you go with this, but believe me, even a marginal weight saving can have a drastic impact on your rig performance!

However, remember that an RC car still has to follow the same nfewtonian laws of
physics, with a lighter rig comes lesser traction, so this is something to carefully consider and balance your considerations like other factors to do with your driving style, especially if you love going heavy into the corners. All part of the fun!

New / Spare Tyres

Adjusting tyres for the type of terrain you are looking to hit is imperative in terms of raw speed performance, it is also worthwhile checking out the general quality of your stock tyres.  Don’t compromise with poor stock tyres with limited traction and durability, not to mention that poor quality tyres are likely to balloon off the wheels eventually!

What sort of driver are you?  A straight line racer will benefit from slick tyres giving more raw speed whereas burlier, heavier tyres are going to be better for handling the rough and uneven stuff, especially around those harsh corners!

New Motor

What sort of motor is your rig running? Perhaps upgrading to a more efficient motor is the way forward to improve your rigs speed. A lot of starter rigs use the less efficient brush motors, so moving over to a brushless type motor is going to give you tons of extra performance.

Or try adjust your pinion and spur gears! It’s straightforward enough to adjust the speed or acceleration of your rig by adjusting the gear ratio.

Your RC has two gears, the pinion and spur gears respectively.  Gears with a greater number of teeth correlate with a higher speed, whereas gears with lesser teeth count towards more acceleration.  Bear in mind though, if you are running higher teeth gears to check the temperature of your car as anything too excessive can lead to damage!

4. Longevity

The main thing to look at in terms of prolonging the life of your rig is to upgrade chassis parts- all the more worthwhile to consider if you are running a lot of power to the wheels.

Let us not forget the smaller details too, like switching from grease to an oil like WD-40 to keep things lubricated – a smart way of maintaining and keeping your rig running smoothy for years to come.

5. More Track Fun

You may think you have lesser driving skills than your friends who seem to effortlessly tear up the track, but perhaps it is your rig holding you back. So you now have a fully tweaked out and upgraded rig, welcome to the serious fun club. With the extra speed and durability, it means you can go push your rig beyond its factory limits

6. Winning Edge

So you have indulged in learning more about the inner-workings of your RC.  Your pilot skills have drastically improved, and now you have your RC fully tricked, tuned and upgraded.  You are now ready.  It is time to hit the track and make history!

7. Sense Of Pride

Tricking out and optimising your RC can sometimes take alot of trial and error, thought and a bit of time, but to have your RC performing beyond its factory potential and have it running rings around your opponents is something very special indeed.  Be loud and proud!

8. Jumping and Bashing!
